Barndominium Living
Barn house living has really had an explosion in interest over the past 5 years. I believe the interest come from the stylish exterior and multifunction conveniences of barndominiums. The uses are so flexible and endless. Many barndominiums can be used as businesses, multi-family homes or workshops. They easily house recreational toys and farm equipment, boats, motorcycles, show cars, ATVs and RV's. The list is really endless.
Top Reasons for a Barn Home Build:
1) Affordability
2) Versatile / Multi-Functional Use
3) Open Spaces with Tall Ceilings, Walls and Garage doors
4) Lots of Style and Charm
5) Low Maintenance
6) Unique Designs / Not Cookie Cutter/ Stylish
7) Large Working Spaces/ Shop
8) Wow Factor
9) Room for all your toys- Boats, RVs, 4-Wheelers, Cars, Golfcarts etc.
Other Name for barndominiums: Shouses, Post Frame, Barn-House, Barndo, Polebarn house. The are all synonymous for a barn type home.
There is a quest for smaller living spaces now and enjoying the outdoors more. Additional reason for building a barn home: farm animals, equipment storage, room for large gatherings and reunions. The space allows for you to hold as little or as much as you want which is appealing to many.
We personally wanted a barndominium to have as a "homebase" for when we retire and place to land in between traveling and storage for our motorhome. The early retirement thought process quickly led to us selling our large home in the suburbs and headed straight to country living. We began to prep for our future "dream".
Some of the original brainstorming options included.
1) Full time RV living only.
2) Single wide trailer living with a carport or garage for the RV.
3) Tiny Home Living.
4) Small plot of land 1-2 acres just to park a motorhome or RV. (Cindy's wish)
5) Large plot of land with room to roam. (Tony's wish)
6) Downsizing to a smaller house with a larger garage.
7) Flipping a small space with room for a motorhome.
8) *Barndominium with land.
While scouting out some local land in our planning stages, we came across empty farmland that we fell in love with. The land has open pasture and woodlands with no buildings. It also has some really cool features including a view of a really cool bridge and a wooded cliff side. We decided to purchase the land along with our daughter and son in law who is also looking for a homesite. We split the price of the land, and this made it affordable for both parties.
We sold our house in 2018 and the plans started for the homebase barndominium. We stated drawing up the plans ourselves and trying to figure out a floorplan. It really helps to make a list of likes and dislikes to get the features you want.

Here is a Power Point of our House plans for the polebarn with Living Quarters
Our Amish contractor started on the barn home in June 2019. This video is filming the very first day of digging and pouring the footers and columns. *We have an Amish Contractor who gave us permission to film. *The Amish children are occasionally present at the job site for "teaching/training"
*The contractor completed the shell and garage portion and we finished out the interior.
This video shows some drone footage of the almost completed exterior. Tony also talks about getting temporary electric and a DIY meter pole for service

We do a look back from the empty land, to excavation, then the start of the polebarn erection. It's a fun process to watch. I can't believe how much we've gotten accomplished. 💙Special thanks to Ange, my daughter for her drone skills!
